Laboratory System Design

UX UI DESIGN

LAB 3 is a renew laboratory system project I participated in Prenetics. It is a system which use to record DNA samples received, analysis DNA samples, generate DNA result report and send report back to customers. The goal of the redesign is to help integrate the old system with the new laboratory machines we bought. It also helps reduce unnecessary manual works so as to reduce error, which in turn makes our users can get their job done more efficient and smoother.

My Role

  1. UX Designer: I cooperate with my product manager and lab leader to utilise the users’ feedback about the old system and bring conceptual ideas to solutions. We reconstruct the information architecture, redesign user journey and build an efficient tool to help our users to achieve their goals.

  2. UI Designer:  I visualise ideas to interfaces and create simple interactive prototype.

  3. Present idea and organise user test with stakeholders to ensure the design is user-friendly.

  4. Coordinate with programmers if they have any concern or suggestion about the design.

Who are the Users

  1. Lab officers who responsible to register sample, prepare sample extraction and analysis sample.

  2. Lab managers who monitor the lab process and control result quality.

What Do They Need

  1. Need a more systematic and automatic solution for data storing.

  2. Meet the requirement to integrate with the old system with new technology and new machines

1. Register Sample

SF courier sends DNA samples from customers to our office everyday. Our users have to unpack the samples and scan the barcode on each sample using a barcode scanner which connected to the LAB 3 system. Through just one sample action, scan the barcode, the backend will link up the sample status with the customer profile.

Our company have different genetic service products. The return sample procedure are different among products. We have to keep record on all these return info. So I have created an admin page which is for the manager who can create return sample method options, in order to reduce programmers workload in the future since the lab offices can take responsibility in doing that.

2. Incubation

This is a new requirement for lab system integration. Some of the DNA sample types have to do incubation before they are ready for extraction. New system has to be able to track whether the samples have been passed incubation yet and also to count the incubation time to ensure the quality of the samples.

3. Extraction

4. Result Quality Checking (QC)

Our lab offices only have to upload the data sheet to the system, through backend calculation, the system is able to judge the sample result is pass or fail. But our lab managers still have to do a sample quality checking. So I designed an admin page for the lab managers who are responsible to double check and make the finally approval on the sample result.
